Online Booking vs. Phone-Only Scheduling: What's Right for an Auto Repair Shop?

A broader systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 10 randomized trials across 9 countries and more than 8,200 participants found reminders improved attendance overall, with telephone reminders showing a more consistent effect across studies than SMS reminders, which trended positive but carried more variability between trials.

Neither of those studies was conducted in an auto shop, and it would be overreaching to claim the exact percentages transfer to vehicle service appointments. What does transfer is the underlying mechanism: a reminder that lands a day or two before an appointment gives a customer a chance to actively reschedule instead of passively forgetting, and that mechanism doesn't depend on the customer's original appointment having been medical, automotive, or anything else. It's a reasonable bet that a shop sending automated reminders will see fewer no-shows than a shop that doesn't, even without automotive-specific data to point to.

A short web form asking what's wrong, the vehicle's make and model, and a callback number can capture the lead without pretending the shop can commit to bay time it hasn't assessed yet. The service advisor who calls back can then have the actual conversation: how long has this been happening, has any diagnostic work already been done elsewhere, does this sound like it needs an hour of diagnostic time or a same-day teardown. That conversation is the thing a booking widget cannot replace, because it's the step where the shop actually figures out what job it's agreeing to do.
